Call the local tourism office. Most every country, state, and city will have a tourism office that’ll be more than happy to help you with your travel plans. Simply ask them, “When’s your peak season months?” (For a comprehensive directory of tourism offices, follow this link.)
This is the most completely guide about traveling I´ve ever read in my life. Thanks for share it with us. Certainly planning a travel is always a hard task, in fact, my girlfriend and I are thinking in go to Cuba, we want to meet the communism before falls down ?
Get rid of your mail, go paperless, and set up online bill payment for your recurring bills to ensure you won’t miss any overseas. If you are still going to get paper mail, use a service like Earth Class Mail, which will collect and scan your mail for you. (If you are going on a two-week trip, you don’t really need to worry about this, so you can skip this step, too.)
There’s really no right way to do this — you might want to book direct from an airline’s website so you’re guaranteed to pick seats (assuming basic economy rules don’t apply) or if you want to use accumulated flyer miles to pay. You might also want to book via aggregators like Orbitz and Expedia to earn points, or use points from your credit card to book. The general advice is booking direct with the airline generally garner you more leverage when flight cancellations or other irregularities happen so you don’t have to contact a third party to rebook, but depending on your credit card, you may also have better travel protection policies. Check with your local bank to determine your eligibilities before making the final decision on where to book.
While a lot of people think “I’m healthy, I don’t need travel insurance. I won’t get sick,” travel insurance is much more than just medical protection. It covers you when your camera breaks, your flight is canceled, a family member dies and you have to come home, or something is stolen.
But if that’s all you do with it, you’re missing out. Google Flights has some amazing features that make planning that vacation so much easier. Click here for five secrets to using Google Flights for the best deals.
Pack Up + Go plans 3-day weekend trips around the United States. All you have to do is tell us your budget and fill out a quick survey.  We’ll take care of your travel + accommodation arrangements – all while keeping your destination a surprise.
These are the brands that I recommend. They all have their pros and cons, but they are comprehensive and easy to use, and they cater to a variety of needs and interests. And while most customers will be searching for flights, hotels and rental cars, remember that many of these services can book cruises and activities as well.
This guide is incredible! So detailed and informative. Although, we’ve never used a pre-paid travel card. When we started out most of them had bad reviews so we opted for a joint bank account -with the lowest fees we could find – which we’d transfer to as and when we needed. I’ve definitely seen more people suggest them these days. Maybe it’s something for us to consider!
I am planning a trip to Europe in July 2014. I’m interested in learning more about your opinion of world nomads insurance. I’ve looked on their website since I saw you mention it and it looks like a great choice. Only thing I couldn’t find specified was electronkcs. Do you know if they specifically cover laptops or camera?
All-Inclusive means you can truly relax and indulge on your vacation, because it’s all included for one incredible price. Buy a travel guide. Even though they may be considered old-fashioned, a printed travel guide can be one of the best companions for your travel. They will have suggestions for activities and ratings for specific companies. The information in reputable guides is usually very accurate.
Though it is similar in many ways to sites like Priceline and Expedia, I am consistently impressed with Travelocity’s travel packages. Instead of just booking a flight and a room, you can combine airfare, hotels, rental cars and more.
Alternative: Contact people on hospitality websites like Couchsurfing or Be Welcome and ask if they would be willing to host you. You want to do this in advance so people have time to rearrange their schedule and plan for your visit. Moreover, you can also consider apartment rental sites like Wimdu or Airbnb.
First and foremost the pricing is the same, when booking with a travel agent you have someone that has your back.  If you have a problem in destination and you booked it online who are you going to contact?
Are you planning overseas travel or a domestic trip at home? Either way, the whole idea of taking a trip is to have a memorable time, to have fun and relax, and not to spend your whole vacation time worrying about money.
To use public transport in Sydney requires the Opal card, I have information on it in one of my posts I’m linking to below. The hop-on-hop-off bus can be useful too as a way of getting your bearings and seeing the highlights, then determining if you want to go back and explore a particular spot in more depth.

While you can opt to buy a local SIM card, assuming you’ve got an unlocked phone, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Viber have made it easy to make international calls for free. Just remember to add your contacts in before leaving and hope your hotel Wi-Fi is strong enough to support a quick chat.
Sometimes you won’t find your favorite or most convenient airlines on these sites. Southwest Airlines doesn’t list its flights with any third party vendors, while American Airlines is missing from both Orbitz and Expedia. When in doubt, search your itinerary directly with airlines to ensure that you don’t miss a cheap rate.
I’m planning a 14 day train. And hike it Paris to Rome next May. I researched hostels there they looked really cheesey. Is there a list of hostels and b&bs from Paris to Rome? I’m going alone is it safe? I’ll be charging the flight and rooms and have a budget of 1600$ any suggestions
Normally a woman would eat 2000 calories a day and on fast days you only eat 500 calories that is a 75 percent saving on food bills per fast day. Or a 21% saving on weekly food bills which for me works out about £5 per week saving or £260 per year to go in the holiday fund. Also just signed up for the British Airways American Express Credit Card who are giving 9000 Avios points if you spend £1,000 on their card in the first 3 months – thats enough for a flight from the UK to Europe – no monthly fees either, just pay off the card at the end of each month and ‘bingo’ you got yourself a totally free flight.
So you know where you’re going and how long you’ll be there, but to really nail down how much money you need, your next task is to research the costs in your destination at the style of travel you want. Do you want to backpack, or would you rather stay in luxury hotels? How much are hostels, hotels, restaurants, and attractions? Knowing will allow you to estimate how much money you’ll need for your trip. You can begin with my travel guide section or simply buy a guidebook (which are really good for things like this).
Okay, you’re inspired, prepared, and on your way to saving money for your trip. But before you go buy that flight or book that hotel, check for deals you might have missed. You may dream of Paris but maybe there are great deals to Berlin right now. Maybe you can get a seven-day cruise for 70% off, a package deal to Hawaii for the price of your flight to Paris, or 50% off sailing trips around Greece.
I was looking for some tool that can help me save information from sites like Tripadvisor , Lonely Planet etc easily and I stumbled on this post. Incredible info. Thanks for suggesting unwander.com, it has been a life saver in the research phase.
I loved your comments about the security provided by using credit cards when planning vacations. It definitely makes sense to me that being able to dispute a charge or be reimbursed for something you didn’t plan on would give you peace of mind. Some card providers might even have some sort of deal in place to help you get a good rate on your travels.
You can use any ATM in the world and Schwab reimburses all the ATM fees at the end of each month. It seems that if there was an award for most favorite (and the least evil) bank ever it would probably win.
For example, when you visit Sydney you need an Opal Card to get around on public transport. When you visit London you need an Oyster Card for public transportation. Are you planning to travel through Europe by train?
The site is particularly suited for people with open-ended travel plans, enabling them to find recommendations within their budget. Kayak’s “Explore” tool shows a world map that highlights each destination and a conspicuously cheap fare. For example, you might scroll over Asia and find a flight to Tokyo for $650. The dates might not be ideal, but the information will help you figure out the best times to book.
Off-peak season. This is when the majority of tourists aren’t visiting a destination — typically due to weather (e.g., a ski lodge in the summer). You’ll normally find very affordable flights and accommodations during this time, but on the flip side, there’s usually a reason for it being “off-peak.” In some countries, off-peak can mean a monstrous monsoon happens nearly every day.

Skyscanner is a comparison site that searches millions of flights from over a thousand airlines, and once you’ve found your flight on Skyscanner you are taken to the airline or agency to make your booking (no extra fees added).
Nice guide Craig! New York City is really a great place for food, especially if you are a pizza lover! Been there last week and tried the pizza napoletana at Ribalta Plaza and it’s amazing! We stayed at The Skyline Hotel and it’s the perfect location for me and my family as it is near the city center and shopping, sighseeing, bars and restaurants are all nearby! Yeah I agree specially on your Step 4 that booking ahead of time is a must specially for busy cities in New York. Thanks!
If you don’t plan to leave your destination once you get there (for example, if you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort), you may not need a rental car. Consider a taxi or shuttle from the airport instead.
[…] they say, the more, the merrier. To make it an even more memorable experience, it is important to carefully plan where to head and what to do. With this, below are some of the things that you might find to be […]
Travel insurance is something you will need on the road. You never know what might happen, and most health plans won’t cover you overseas. I never thought I would pop my eardrum while I was scuba diving or break my camera in Italy. My friend never thought he would break his leg hiking; another friend certainly didn’t expect her father would die and she would have to fly back home.
Before you book a flight, hotel room, or vacation package, check the price on each of the individual vendor’s sites. Oftentimes, cutting out the middle man and booking separately is cheaper than buying a package on sites like Expedia or Orbitz. Furthermore, buying directly from the airline gives you more flexibility to manage your flights, and calling the hotel can result in unadvertised savings (especially during low season and if you are celebrating a special occasion). Remember, third party sites require full payment up front, so do your homework before plunking down the plastic.
“You don’t have to fly out of your own home city. I’m from Atlanta. However, when I flew out to India a few years ago I didn’t fly out of Atlanta. I booked a few different tickets that took me from Baltimore, then back to Atlanta, then to Paris, then to Bombay. I ended up coming back through my home airport — but it was cheaper than trying to find a flight from Atlanta to India!”
Tip in a Tip: There are a ton of theories out there about the best time of day and the best day of the week to buy airline tickets. Some people say Tuesday at 3 p.m.; others say Wednesday at 1 a.m. or the weekend. So, which is it? I’ve done the research. Click here for the best time to book a ticket and to fly.
I’m often surprised how many people book these elements separately or just wait until they arrive at their destination to figure out the details. If you’re not using rewards points, Travelocity is one of the best services for saving money on the cost of your trip. According to the company, people who combine just their flight and hotel save $525 on average. That’s a lot of cocktail money.
Beware of hotels or airlines labeled “top picks” in your search results. These aren’t necessarily of a higher quality or better value. Instead, they are often a business partner of the booking site, and therefore get populated at the top of your search.
Hey Ashley, glad you found our tips for planning a trip useful. Yeah, a pre-paid travel card is not our favorite option and wouldn’t be our first choice, but we like to have multiple ways to access our cash whilst on the road. So just adding it in there for people to consider.
Learn to cook – I learned to cook while in college (a skill that has helped me ever since), and before I left on my big trip, I cut down on eating out to two times per week. I cooked a large dinner and then enjoyed the leftovers for lunch the next day, thus saving more money. Cook more, eat out less, and travel sooner.
You’re taking advantage of their mistake. If you point out how they messed up, they’re going to realize it and not let you have the deal. Stick to booking through the sites above or through third-party sites like Skyscanner instead.
