Prioritize sightseeing or activities. If you have a long list of activities to do or sights to see, rank them based on how important they are to you. That way, you will know to make time for the items at the top of the list.
All-Inclusive means you can truly relax and indulge on your vacation, because it’s all included for one incredible price. Apple Vacations packs just about everything in our all-inclusive vacation packages — including transportation, your hotel stay, meals and drinks. If you need even more ideas, sites like Booking.com’s Destination Finder can also help you figure out where to go depending on interests. Once you know where you’re going, you can use tools from Kayak and Hopper to check whether a flight price is good value.
Print out hard copies and save your confirmation emails into a “folder” in your web-based email account. Consider leaving copies at home with a trusted person, and if traveling with a partner each carry copies.

This guide is incredible! So detailed and informative. Although, we’ve never used a pre-paid travel card. When we started out most of them had bad reviews so we opted for a joint bank account -with the lowest fees we could find – which we’d transfer to as and when we needed. I’ve definitely seen more people suggest them these days. Maybe it’s something for us to consider!
Major credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express offer apps that can help you find local ATMs, prepare a mobile wallet, or convert currencies. Just be sure to notify your banks if you plan on using the cards abroad so you’re not unexpectedly locked out.
As a traveling family, if it’s an overseas trip and a long haul flight I like to plan my trip so we get to our destination as quickly as possible, with the most amount of comfort and facilities our budget allows!
If you want a free flight, use the cards that help with that. If you want free hotel rooms, get a hotel card. You don’t need to sign up for very many cards; pick one or two and focus on those. Do this the moment you decide you want to travel. Don’t wait — waiting equals lost miles, which means less free travel.

Regardless of your mode of travel, consider packing a first aid kit, snacks, and entertainment for the travel time. Car trips and air travel both involve long periods of potential boredom, so consider bringing along games or activities for the travelers, especially if you are traveling with children.
You don’t have any other way to pay for it. Soon you’re in a French gulag, breaking big rocks into smaller rocks until you can repay your debt. This is what could happen (probably) if you don’t warn your credit card company about your travels.
You can use any ATM in the world and Schwab reimburses all the ATM fees at the end of each month. It seems that if there was an award for most favorite (and the least evil) bank ever it would probably win.
Know how much time you will spend in the hotel. For very active vacations, a hotel room is often little more than a place you will sleep at night, and a lower cost will leave you with more money to spend on activities or meals. If you’re planning a more relaxed vacation, you may want a comfortable place to relax in luxury.
Check your passport if it has enough pages for the countries you are going to. Some countries take a page. Check the validity as well. You are safe to have at least 6 months before your entry to any destination.

Before you depart, be sure to contact your bank and credit card companies to inform them that you will be traveling, where to and when. This is to stop them putting a freeze on your card if they see unusual transactions from overseas.
“One of my wife’s and I’s favorite thing to do each year is to go to Western Europe either over President’s Day weekend or MLK Day weekend. It’s not a holiday over there. The weather is not as nice as it is in America, but everything is half price and you can walk straight in.”
Coincidentally we will be in Rome for the canonization in April, that should prove interesting. Hopefully, the person who rented us an apt in Trestavere will not come up with some excuse as the demand will be high.
You’re taking advantage of their mistake. If you point out how they messed up, they’re going to realize it and not let you have the deal. Stick to booking through the sites above or through third-party sites like Skyscanner instead.
Not all cities have public transit directions in Google Maps. Before you can get transit directions, your local transit agency needs to add their route info to Google Maps. See which cities are covered.
No matter how long you’ll be gone, it’s a good idea to let your credit card companies know you will be overseas; that way any transactions that you make aren’t flagged as fraudulent and your card is less likely to be blocked. There’s nothing worse than having to sit on the phone with your credit card company instead of enjoying your vacation.
Nice guide Craig! New York City is really a great place for food, especially if you are a pizza lover! Been there last week and tried the pizza napoletana at Ribalta Plaza and it’s amazing! We stayed at The Skyline Hotel and it’s the perfect location for me and my family as it is near the city center and shopping, sighseeing, bars and restaurants are all nearby! Yeah I agree specially on your Step 4 that booking ahead of time is a must specially for busy cities in New York. Thanks!
You can learn a lot about a destination through its food and drink, and you can even plan a trip by eating your way through a destination. For some people that is their favorite thing about travel. Is that you?
If you are planning an overseas trip and don’t have a passport yet, give yourself enough time to apply – at least 6 weeks before departure and preferably as soon as you have booked your flights and accommodation.
Defining where you want to go sets a goal to work toward. A lot of people talk vaguely about travel. They never say where they are going, just that they are going. Picking a destination is immensely important, as it gives you a definite goal. It’s a lot easier to mentally get behind “I am going to Paris” than “I’m going to Europe.” Not only will your trip become more concrete for you and easier to commit to, but it will make planning easier as well.
In my opinion, these apps are the bare minimum you should have before taking off, but for specific interests like food spotting or finding locals to hang out with, BonAppetour has a great list for a variety of needs.
“[My wife and I] were in Switzerland a couple of years ago and we stayed at a hostel in a private room,” recalls Naveen. “There are no budget hotels in a place like Switzerland. It’s either a hostel or ultra-glamorous hotel. The hostel we stayed at was still very comfortable and affordable for us though.”
To help you even more with planning your vacation, we also talked to a few notable travel bloggers and professionals on how you can get the most out of your vacation planning. They’ve dedicated themselves to helping others get the most out of their travel experiences — and now they want to help you.
One thing you will need is an international travel plug adaptor like this one below by OREI so you can plug in your charger, phone, and laptop. We don’t go anywhere without one of these and it makes for a great travel gift.
If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re ready for a vacation, but you don’t want to pay a travel agent to plan a trip, you’re not sure where to start, and you’re a DIY kind of person who’s willing to put in some elbow grease. Great! This guide will serve as a handy list to help you plan a getaway, from getting good flight deals to making sure you won’t get stranded abroad. You want to get away for awhile — we all do. This is the best way to go from daydreaming about far-off destinations to actually visiting them.
As travel bloggers, we know more than most the frustration at not being able to be connected on the road. But you might just like to update your Facebook account or send emails so family and friends can follow your travels.
Many cities around the world offer local ride-sharing or taxi-hailing apps, so it’s worth checking if that’s something you’re willing to splurge on and download in advance. Having this tied to your credit card will eliminate to need to have cash handy first thing when you’re leaving the airport and getting a ride to your hotel. If you want to have some cash handy, however, you are more likely to get better rates exchanging it in advance with your local bank than to do so at airports.
Few will be surprised that Google Flights ranks No. 1 on my list, but it’s not just because Google has so much data at its fingertips. The reason Google excels is that it can tell the difference between a cheap flight and a good one.
If you’re extremely flexible on time and place but not so much on cash, your best bet is to follow flight deals sites. There are countless of sites like Airfarewatchdog or The Flight Deal, but one of the web’s most raved-about services is Scott’s Cheap Flights. You can sign up for a free newsletter, or get a paid subscription for insider alerts to ridiculously cheap fares. (I got a roundtrip flight from New York to Japan and Singapore for under $500.)
There’s really no right way to do this — you might want to book direct from an airline’s website so you’re guaranteed to pick seats (assuming basic economy rules don’t apply) or if you want to use accumulated flyer miles to pay. You might also want to book via aggregators like Orbitz and Expedia to earn points, or use points from your credit card to book. The general advice is booking direct with the airline generally garner you more leverage when flight cancellations or other irregularities happen so you don’t have to contact a third party to rebook, but depending on your credit card, you may also have better travel protection policies. Check with your local bank to determine your eligibilities before making the final decision on where to book.
Another excellent and inspiring article. I don’t thank-you near enough for changing my thoughts of travel into dreams of travel, then plans, then actions, then reality. I’m still a budding traveler but it’s already changed my life and you helped me get here! Thank you for your amazing blog ?
If you’re planning a trip and want to see live entertainment while away, like a concert or an MLB game for instance, you can use this handy venue locator http://www.clickitticket.com/find-venues-near-me.asp – all you do is enter your zip code where you will be and the max number of miles you want to travel, and it will show you where all the nearest venues are for concerts, sports and theater. And it lists all the events scheduled at each venue when you click on the links. It’s pretty cool and useful for planning all kinds of things when on vacation.
Off-peak season. This is when the majority of tourists aren’t visiting a destination — typically due to weather (e.g., a ski lodge in the summer). You’ll normally find very affordable flights and accommodations during this time, but on the flip side, there’s usually a reason for it being “off-peak.” In some countries, off-peak can mean a monstrous monsoon happens nearly every day.
