Many of us have made the mistake of booking a flight for a song, only to end up in a cramped seat, with no meal and hidden baggage fees. Even if you like to rough it, there is nothing wise or convenient about a 3 a.m. departure from Guatemala City. Click here to learn more about how to avoid this situation.
Nice guide Craig! New York City is really a great place for food, especially if you are a pizza lover! Been there last week and tried the pizza napoletana at Ribalta Plaza and it’s amazing! We stayed at The Skyline Hotel and it’s the perfect location for me and my family as it is near the city center and shopping, sighseeing, bars and restaurants are all nearby! Yeah I agree specially on your Step 4 that booking ahead of time is a must specially for busy cities in New York. Thanks!
Sometimes their mishaps lead to some great deals for you through “error fares.” Error fares are airline tickets that are, temporarily, a WAY lower price than they’d normally be (typically through technical or human error). These fares often mean travelers can get tickets from mainland U.S. to places like Europe and Asia for a few hundred dollars or less.
While a lot of people think “I’m healthy, I don’t need travel insurance. I won’t get sick,” travel insurance is much more than just medical protection. It covers you when your camera breaks, your flight is canceled, a family member dies and you have to come home, or something is stolen.
Forrester Research recently reported that one in five travelers wants to take a trip, but is at a loss about where to go. If you’re one of that 20 percent seeking inspiration, you’re in luck! A host of new online tools have been built just for you. Here are some of our favorites:
I really appreciate how comprehensive this list is. All of the information about the best travel insurance companies is especially useful because when I travel outside of school I never know which insurance to get. In the past, I have also struggled with keeping track of everything that needs to get done to plan a trip. I’ve started using the to do list app Bzzy https://getbzzy.com/ because it is easy to create a master travel task list, prioritize, and access on a mobile device when traveling.
When heading to a foreign country, Google Translate is a must. Ideally, you should download the language you want ahead of time so you can use it offline. Same goes for Google Maps. You can select an area you want to save and navigate without internet connectivity.
We all want ease and convenience when traveling, especially when it comes to accessing our money. We also want to reduce our bank and transaction fees. The more money we keep in our own pockets, the more we have to spend on travel.
Secret Flying. This site immediately posts any errors or deals they find. You can even use their handy search function and enter your country of origin and destination so they can find a deal more suited for you.

No matter how long you’ll be gone, it’s a good idea to let your credit card companies know you will be overseas; that way any transactions that you make aren’t flagged as fraudulent and your card is less likely to be blocked. There’s nothing worse than having to sit on the phone with your credit card company instead of enjoying your vacation.
By using this post as a guideline, you can better organize and prepare for your trip (and if you are looking for more in-depth information about planning a trip, check out my book for next steps). You’ll check all the boxes, not miss anything, and have plenty of money for your vacation. It can be as simple as booking a flight and packing or as complex as rearranging your entire life to go backpack the world forever.
I’ve planned countless trips for myself (and even some for friends), and over the years, I’ve developed an efficient little checklist that ensures I don’t miss anything important (I like lists). I don’t want to get to my next destination and then realize I forgot something.
All Apple Vacations’ air/hotel packages include roundtrip airfare, airport/hotel transfers, accommodations, hotel baggage handling, taxes and an Apple Representative in resort! Look for All-Inclusive or Unlimited-Luxury® and all your meals, drinks, activities, entertainment and more are included too!
Cut the coffee – That daily coffee costs you $120 per month ($4 per coffee). An extra $1,440 per year pays for two months in Southeast Asia! What’s more important: your daily cup of Joe or getting to spend two more months enjoying the beaches of Thailand or exploring the jungles of Borneo?
I loved your comments about the security provided by using credit cards when planning vacations. It definitely makes sense to me that being able to dispute a charge or be reimbursed for something you didn’t plan on would give you peace of mind. Some card providers might even have some sort of deal in place to help you get a good rate on your travels.
Expedia has flight and hotel deals that are just waiting for you. Getting your preferred flights and accommodations are the ingredients for a good trip. Combining them together with us into one easy package is a recipe for success that takes out the stress and saves money. You’ll have more money and time to splurge on your Plan getaway!
I was about to plan a trip for myself and just when I found this. Thank you for providing such descriptive and well-elaborated tips. I would definitely keep them in mind while planning a trip for me now.
Many cities around the world offer local ride-sharing or taxi-hailing apps, so it’s worth checking if that’s something you’re willing to splurge on and download in advance. Having this tied to your credit card will eliminate to need to have cash handy first thing when you’re leaving the airport and getting a ride to your hotel. If you want to have some cash handy, however, you are more likely to get better rates exchanging it in advance with your local bank than to do so at airports.
You’re taking advantage of their mistake. If you point out how they messed up, they’re going to realize it and not let you have the deal. Stick to booking through the sites above or through third-party sites like Skyscanner instead.
Another excellent and inspiring article. I don’t thank-you near enough for changing my thoughts of travel into dreams of travel, then plans, then actions, then reality. I’m still a budding traveler but it’s already changed my life and you helped me get here! Thank you for your amazing blog ?

When I decided to quit my job and travel the world, I walked into a bookstore and bought Lonely Planet’s Southeast Asia on Shoestring. It made the trip seem more real, but it didn’t prepare me for planning a long world trip. Back then, there weren’t really blogs, guides, and apps like there are today. I was lost. I figured it out as I went, just hoping I didn’t miss anything.
At the bare minimum, you will need weather appropriate clothes and toiletries. If you are traveling to a foreign country with a different currency, you should also plan to exchange money for the currency of your destination.
There’s really no right way to do this — you might want to book direct from an airline’s website so you’re guaranteed to pick seats (assuming basic economy rules don’t apply) or if you want to use accumulated flyer miles to pay. You might also want to book via aggregators like Orbitz and Expedia to earn points, or use points from your credit card to book. The general advice is booking direct with the airline generally garner you more leverage when flight cancellations or other irregularities happen so you don’t have to contact a third party to rebook, but depending on your credit card, you may also have better travel protection policies. Check with your local bank to determine your eligibilities before making the final decision on where to book.
A 2016 study conducted by Project: Time Off (an organization dedicated to improving people’s work culture) discovered that Americans lost 222 million unused vacation days over the course of the year due to pressures at work.
On a previous overseas trip, we missed an important flight from Bangkok to Sydney once because we had it in our head that our flight departed five hours later than it actually did. Whilst we were sitting in a bar in the city the plane flew over our heads.
Book special adventures ahead of time. If you want to do something special, like a tour of a special collection at a museum, a whale watching trip, a performance, a sunset cruise, or a very fancy dinner, make reservations ahead of time.
“I’ve been traveling more for friendships than anything else,” Naveen Dittakavi of the travel deal website Next Vacay says. “It’s nice to bond and catch up with old friends — especially as we get older.”
Choose activities everyone can participate in. Make sure you think of all of your travel companions when booking activities. If you are traveling with children, be sure planned activities are kid-friendly. If someone in your group has health or dietary considerations, try to be respectful of those as you plan the trip.

Pick a destination out of a hat. If there is no compromise on the horizon, let fate choose for you. Write down all of the destinations and put them in a jar or a hat. Then have someone (ideally, an unbiased third party) pull a name out. That’s where you’ll go!
Though you might not want to copy other people’s photos, you can leverage Instagram collections like Matt and start compiling your own images from places you’d like to go. For information on how to exactly do that, check out Instagram’s page on it here.
As a traveling family, if it’s an overseas trip and a long haul flight I like to plan my trip so we get to our destination as quickly as possible, with the most amount of comfort and facilities our budget allows!
Tip in a Tip: There are a ton of theories out there about the best time of day and the best day of the week to buy airline tickets. Some people say Tuesday at 3 p.m.; others say Wednesday at 1 a.m. or the weekend. So, which is it? I’ve done the research. Click here for the best time to book a ticket and to fly.
Aw – you forgot my favourite way of travelling as an option! Why not consider a stint in a campervan/motorhome which is both hotel and car hire in one? If you’re just staying in a city, then yeah maybe its not worth it, but if you’re a bit more adventurous and want to see more of a country and its people, then its a fantastic way to go. It’s a very effective method in countries like Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. Just wait until you see how many rented (and purchased) RV’s there on the US roads. I just got back to Aus after doing a stint in a Cruise America RV and they are very popular there.
In my opinion, these apps are the bare minimum you should have before taking off, but for specific interests like food spotting or finding locals to hang out with, BonAppetour has a great list for a variety of needs.
“I always have a budget for travel,” Naveen says. “That includes saving a couple hundred dollars a month towards a travel fund. This is the money that I saved through the IWT system. I use for hotels and restaurants.”
Decide why you want to travel. If you know why you want to leave home, choosing a destination will be easier. Determining whether your goal is to relax and unwind, have new adventures, see famous or ancient sights, or provide your children with lifelong memories will determine what kind of destination you should choose.[1]
The best part is that it employs flesh-and-blood people who spend their days seeking out the best fares. It’s kind of like having a personal travel shopper. Airfarewatchdog does the research while you sit back and wait for the deals to rush in.
Rent a vehicle if you will need to get around a lot once you have reached your destination. If you’ll be doing a lot of sight-seeing in areas that are spread out, a rental car will be a better option than taxi services. Be sure you know your hotel’s parking policies and fees.
The Flight Deal. Another great site to find amazing deals on airfare as well as hotels, rental cars, and travel credit cards. They also give you information on flight deals happening in almost every major U.S. metro area.
All-Inclusive means you can truly relax and indulge on your vacation, because it’s all included for one incredible price. Apple Vacations packs just about everything in our all-inclusive vacation packages — including transportation, your hotel stay, meals and drinks. Vacationers love the financial predictability of all-inclusive getaways, because our ‘one price buys all’ means you get to leave your wallet at home.
